Denmark Flume Tank Course - limited spaces available

A limited number of spaces remain available for Cornish Skippers to attend a 2 day course at the Flume tank in Denmark.

The course is aimed at helping Beamtrawl Skippers fine tune their gear.

Please call Sarah Henshall at the Cornwall Fisheries Resource Centre to register your interest and to find out additional information.

The course will take place over 2 days during week of the 30th June 2008.

Penwith College is now able to offer ESOL Skills for Life qualifications. These exams are internationally recognised and can help students to become British citizens.

ESOL Skills for Life qualifications can also be used to help people who want to live in the UK permanently to get UK citizenship. Since November 2005 in order to naturalise and become a UK citizen it is necessary to have at least an ESOL Entry Level 3 qualification and to take the Citizenship Test.

£5 per session (2 hours)

or £50 per month for as many hours as you need

GMDSS VHF/DSC Short Range Certificate

The Short Range Certificate (SRC) is the radio operator qualification which authorises the holder to operate a VHF Radiotelephone fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment. Course: VHF DSC Duration: 1 day Course Content This course covers both the training and examination requirements for the VHF Short Range Certificate and covers the use of a VHF Radio equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This replaces the previous VHF Radio Operators Certificate and is part of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS). All new VHF Radio users need to obtain this certificate to operate the their radios safely and legally. Previous certificate holders need to upgrade to the new Short Range Certificate. Course location: Cornwall Fisheries Resource Centre, Newlyn Tutor: Bob Davey Course Fee: £43.00 Certificate fee: £22.00 Dates: 14th May, 23rd May. Course are held at the CFRC regulary, based on demand. Please call Sarah to register your interest and to book a place on the next available course date. Tel: 01736 364324 A fee is payable for issue of the certificate. The cost of this certificate is currently £22, imposed by the RYA. (This is not included in the Course fee.) A passport style photograph will be required for the issue of the certificate.

GMDSS Long Range Certificate

This certificate forms an important unit in the pathway to obtaining a Fishing Mates ticket (level 3 VQ), Skipper limited (level 4 VQ) (Class 2) and is a legal requirement to operate Sat C radios.

GMDSS General Operators Certificate

The GMDSS GOC qualification is designed for mariners who will be operating within GMDSS Area A1 (VHF range) only, the GOC is required for those who will be operating Outside A1 areas. This course is needed to complete the Class I Skippers ticket.
