Innovative method to remove organic pollutants from molluscs found Print E-mail

RESEARCHERS at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) and the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) have patented an innovative method to remove organic pollutants, such as pesticide residues, from bivalve molluscs.

According to Science Centric, the new technique increases the rate of removal of organic compounds by a factor of two or, depending on the type of pollutant, even four with respect to other methods used to date.

Kilkeel black fish three ordered to pay back £1 million Print E-mail

THREE fishermen and their two fish selling companies have been ordered to pay Confiscation Orders totalling more than £1 million by a judge at Liverpool Crown Court, after an investigation by the Assets Recovery Agency.

The three men have six months to pay the Assets Recovery Agency or face jail sentences of between two years and three months and three years six months, the court was told.

BRITAIN'S fish supply trade is moving into the traditional and somewhat abnormal festive mode this week, according to M&J Seafoods, one of the country's top fish food service suppliers.

Prices for the more popular types of fish eaten over the Christmas and New Year holiday such as salmon and shellfish are likely to rise, but there could be a fall in the price other varieties as demand drops off.

Discards "are not a new issue" AN eco-friendly, sustainable approach is the way forward ,the UK's fisheries minister said last night.

Speaking ahead of this month's key meeting of EU fisheries ministers on stocks, Jonathan Shaw told the Commons that sustainability was vital, in order to preserve the industry for years to come.
Mr Shaw said: "Unsustainable fishing can damage our marine ecosystems, threaten the very resources on which fisherman and many sea anglers and others depend. "It's vital therefore that all stakeholders work together to achieve sustainability, thus safeguarding our marine environment and fishing as a way of life for generations to come."
