Local Food

On 11th September 2007, the BIG Lottery Fund, the largest of the National Lottery good cause distributors, announced the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts as an Award Partner under its Changing Spaces programme. RSWT will manage Local Food, a new £50 million grant scheme.

 TV’s Urban Chef, Oliver Rowe, joined representatives from RSWT and the BIG Lottery Fund at Kentish Town City Farm to celebrate the good news. Oliver is the owner and head chef of the restaurant Konstam which sources more than 90% of its produce from within the area covered by the London Underground. Oliver’s search for ingredients was followed by the BBC for their 2006 series The Urban Chef.

Managed by the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) and 15 consortium partners, Local Food will distribute grants to a variety of food-related projects to help make locally grown food accessible and affordable to local communities.

Communities will benefit from
  • improved health and well-being through exercise and better nutrition;
  • strengthened local economies through the creation of social enterprises;
  • and more sustainability through the better use of resources.
Grants from £2,000 up to £500,000 will be awarded to not-for-profit groups and organisations in England delivering such projects as growing, processing, marketing and distributing local food; composting and raising awareness of the benefits of such activities.The fund will open to applications in early February 2008 Further details, including application forms and guidance notes will be available from Local Food’s website in due course.
