Four fishermen have been rescued by a Royal Navy helicopter after their boat sank off Lands End.

The boat sank completely moments after the crew were winched to safety.

The crew were on a Newlyn-based netter which ran into trouble while fishing about 28 miles north west of the Isles of Scilly.

Falmouth Coastguards were alerted at 1530 BST when the Girl Patricia began taking on water in good weather.

The four men were winched to safety by a RNAS Culdrose helicopter. They were taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital.

Fishing boats and the Sennen Cove all weather lifeboat were also involved in the rescue.

Sea temperature

The 18m (59ft) trawler was on its side and three of the crew, wearing life jackets, were already in the sea when the helicopter arrived. The fourth man jumped from the side of the vessel.

The pilot of the rescue helicopter told BBC News he believed it got there "just in time" as the boat sank completely within minutes.

The four crew members are being assessed in hospital at Truro. They are not thought to be injured, but are suffering from shock and the effects of the cold sea temperature.
