Catching and aquaculture

Major boost for fishermen training announced

Shipping minister, Jim Fitzpatrick has announced funding of £250,000, administered by Seafish, to help fishermen attend a programme of training this year, with the potential for further funding for two more years, subject to review.

Bursary cash

Seafish has offered 10 bursaries of up to £500 to fishermen to enable them to attend the Seafood Choices Alliance Seafood Summit in California next February.

EU proposes aid package for fuel-hit fishing sector

European Union headquarters proposed on Tuesday a package of measures to help fishing fleets hit by rising fuel prices which have sparked protests from fishermen around Europe.

MSC "will not" extend its label to aquaculture

New marine mapping website launched

The Irish minister of state at the Department of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Seán Power, yesterday launched www.infomar.ie a new website which will provide information on the nature of the seabed, physical habitats and water depths, which has been gathered through INFOMAR (Integrated Mapping for the Sustainable Development of Ireland's Marine Resource), Ireland's national marine mapping programme.
