PROSPECTS are good for the mackerel fishery, following a better than anticipated herring season.

This has been underlined by Scottish Fishermen's Organisation chief executive Iain MacSween, who told fishnewseu.com that all the indications at present were that market prospects were good for mackerel across the board.
Meanwhile, he anticipated the herring season winding down by the end of this month with North Sea catching ending this week.
Earlier this week, Mr MacSween said that herring prices had surpassed expectations, reaching around £300 a tonne in some cases and he felt the success of the fishery was due to a combination of market penetration, quality and perseverance.
He felt what had been seen in the herring fishery this year was a market verdict which cam down strongly in favour of a superior product.
